Magic Carpet
History
Founded in 2004, Magic Carpet is a private, all-volunteer organization that works
with a group of diverse professionals in the US and Azerbaijan to realize its mission.
It is registered as a non-profit in the state of Maryland.
Its first undertaking was an English language book, Exploring Azerbaijan from
A to Z, illustrated with drawings by refugee children at Kelbajar School #9 in Ganja.
As the backbone of Magic Carpet’s first fundraising drive, the book serves to raise
public awareness about Azerbaijan in the US while providing crucial program funds.

The vocational training program in Azerbaijan commenced in the fall of 2005. A
professional seamstress is training teens from impoverished families how to sew soft
dolls in national Azeri costume (see photos), simultaneously imparting job skills and
a deeper understanding of their proud heritage. All proceeds from sale of the dolls
will support additional Magic Carpet activities in Azerbaijan. Click here if you would

US outreach efforts were launched in 2005 with an exhibition booth at the annual
Multicultural Fair at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School in Gaithersburg,
Maryland. At the fair Magic Carpet's Pen Pal Club was introduced; currently, over
50 schoolchildren in Azerbaijan and the US are exchanging letters. Participants are
matched by age and interests, and all necessary translations are provided by Magic
Carpet volunteers.
