Magic Carpet
Philosophy
Magic Carpet volunteers are committed to working with children, youth and their
caregivers at every stage of activities, from planning and implementing projects to
evaluating their impact upon participants and the community. In addition to
honing specific skills, every activity is designed to foster a sense of civic
responsibility in the next generation. The result is kids with a can-do attitude and
experience putting their ideas into action to create positive social change.
Target groups and communities are carefully selected to ensure mutual interest
and long term commitment, and activities progress along a continuum that requires
increasing amounts of resources and time: Early efforts focus upon trust building
and concrete, visible improvements (such as painting murals at orphanages, or
repairing school playgrounds). As the young people grow more comfortable
initiating changes they deem necessary, collaboration can evolve into long term
projects that address deeply rooted social problems (such as apprenticeships with
volunteer mentors to overcome nepotism and graft, or prevention programs
addressing domestic violence).
